I got the opportunity to play the highly anticipated Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer beta this past week before it was released to the public. My first impression of the game left me feeling like a little kid at Christmas opening presents.
One of the most surprising aspects to the beta was the time they spent on the detail of the game which left me to believe that they would have left some holes in the game play, no game could have great graphics and great game play could they? Right from the start I was thrown into battle, I felt like I was watching the movie “Black Hawk Down” Activision took the time to heavily detail everything right down to papers and trash blowing around in the wind to cars blowing up leaving debris and door parts all over the area, with life like physics. The multiplayer beta seemed to be fully functionally, with a few minor issues, but ill get into that later.
The gameplay which we all know is the bread and butter to a successful FPS was surprisingly good. The game seemed to have taken the best aspects from Rainbow six Vegas, and Graw 2 and put them into Call of Duty 4
One of the cool new features to the game is the ability to shank someone, Which made for some interesting game play, after spending sometime running around knifing people from behind and right in their face I felt it was time to put this new found ability to the test, And what’s the best way to do this you say? Well it’s to jump out a 2nd story window and on the way down stab someone below with your knife in the heart, Ninja style.
Another new feature to Call of Duty 4 which can be very helpful and very annoying at times is the ability (with the Deep Impact Perk) to be able to shoot through walls, making nowhere on the map safe to hide. What is odd is that bullets can go through thick concrete but an air strike can’t go through a little wooden shed someone is hiding in.
Now I said earlier that there were a few minor issues with the beta. At times there is a short lag at times firing your weapon, When you think you are point blank range with a shotgun firing, or scoped in trying to get that headshot, it can sometimes be a pain, it doesn’t always register the hits. The biggest problem I saw with the game play is that if you fire a rocket at the floor or wall next to an enemy it doesn’t always seem to kill them in fact it doesn’t even seem to hurt them.
Over all for a beta I think it is great! Even with the little issues it has, I will continue to play the beta. If this is anything like what we will see when it is fully released then this could be on its way to being an outstanding first person shooter.
Only time will tell.
Time to go get shanked!
