A couple of months ago Activision announced that the Call of Duty franchise had surpassed $3 billion in sales worldwide. Earlier today Activision revealed that Modern Warfare 2 by itself has surpassed $1 billion in retail sales. While this is an impressive feat by itself, the fact that it happened in only two months is truly amazing.
While Activision has not announced actual unit sales there are analysts that believe the number hovers around the 16.7 million mark. Activision and Infinity Ward did a tremendous job of generating hype for Modern Warfare 2 with the UK version of Official XBox Magazine calling it “The Decade’s Most Anticipated Game”.
Modern Warfare 2 is rumored to have cost Activision and Infinity Ward roughly around 200 million with approximately a fourth of that going to the actual development of the game. The game went on to shatter all sales records with it making approximately $550 million in the first five days on the market. Microsoft even released some staggering numbers from XBox Live such as:
- More than 5.2 million multiplayer hours were logged playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day alone.
- More than 2.2 million unique gamers played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in one day on November 10th. A new one day record for XBox Live.
- More than 11 million achievements were unlocked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day.
“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and video game records,” said Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game.”
